About Mary Tongel

Mary Togel is a Partner at Athena Advocacy, LLC, where they provide compassionate, client-centered legal representation focused on protecting the rights, dignity, and well-being of individuals and families throughout Oregon. With experience in advocacy, litigation, and judicial systems, Mary approaches each matter with professionalism, thoughtful guidance, and a strong commitment to fairness and accessibility.

Before co-founding Athena Advocacy, LLC in 2025, Mary practiced as a solo attorney for three years, developing extensive experience representing clients in sensitive and complex legal matters. Prior to private practice, they served as a Judicial Clerk for Clackamas County Judges Kathi Steele and Todd Van Rysselberghe, gaining valuable insight into courtroom procedure, judicial decision-making, and the legal issues affecting individuals and families within the Oregon court system.

Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2014 before attending Lewis & Clark Law School, where they earned their Juris Doctor in 2018. Over the course of their legal career, they have remained committed to advocacy rooted in respect, inclusion, and meaningful support for clients navigating difficult circumstances.

Professionally, Mary is actively involved in several legal and community organizations, including:

  • Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association
  • Clackamas County Bar Association
  • Multnomah Bar Association
  • OGALLA – Oregon’s LGBTQ+ Bar Association

Their decision to pursue a legal career was driven by a deep commitment to justice and a desire to protect the rights and dignity of others. Mary believes the law can serve as a powerful tool for fairness, stability, and advocacy—particularly during times of uncertainty or vulnerability.

Outside of their legal practice, Mary enjoys reading, relaxing by the river, exploring the world of perfumery, and watching classic B movies. Their thoughtful and grounded approach both inside and outside the courtroom reflects a genuine dedication to helping clients feel supported, respected, and understood throughout the legal process.
